Wrestler of the Week

University of Virginia sophomore Anthony Burke won the Virginia Intercollegiate championship with two falls and a major decision. The Poquoson, Va. native pinned ODU's Bryan LaShomb in the finals and beat Thang Ho of and Louis Sweet JMU en route to the final. Burke also beat Lam Ly of VMI in a dual during the week. The ACC was thinking the same thing InterMat was ... naming Burke the wrestler of the week.

Catching on
Not too many things are going right, at least in the Win-Loss column for Virginia Tech this year, but senior heavyweight Mike Faust made the most of the Hokies' midwestern swing, beating Iowa State's Richard Schopf and Nebraska's Jon May. Faust is ranked 15th nationally in a weight that's been anything but predictable.
Slipping up
N.C. State has already had some peaks and valleys this season, but the Wolfpack fell to East Stroudsburg over the weekend at the Wolfpack Duals. It is to be noticed that Ryan Goodman, last week's InterMat ACC Wrestler of the Week didn't wrestle in the dual. This is a momentary slip, as Carter Jordan has the Pack moving up along with the rest of the gradually improving ACC.
Coming up
Virginia Tech, Virginia and North Carolina will compete in the National College Division at the Virginia Duals this weekend. N.C. State heads up to Maryland for a conference dual then heads to Athens, Ohio for a dual with the Bobcats.

Wrestler of the Week

We'll let the Big 12 handle this one for us this week. Jake Hager, a senior from Perry, Okla., went 2-0 at the Lone Star duals this past weekend where the Sooners defeated Clarion, Utah Valley State and Cal State Fullerton. Hager, ranked No. 5 nationally, pinned both opponents in under two minutes and was awarded the Outstanding Wrestler for the upper weight classes.

Travel weary?
Maybe it was wrestling Northern Iowa and Army then traveling to Iowa City that had Oklahoma State a bit "less-than-stellar" against Iowa -- or maybe it was Iowa simply wrestled tough. No excuses allowed. We'll expect the typical OSU this weekend at the National Duals, where they can't afford to be travel weary, because after Kent State, the rest of the top bracket is waiting for a shot at the top team in the land.
In case you missed it
Ryan Davis made his debut in the Nebraska lineup last week, scoring a techincal fall over Bloomsburg's George Hickman and a fall over Virginia Tech's Joe Thompson.
Slipping up
No disrespect, but perhaps Oklahoma didn't want to get banged up too much before the National Duals, but it was hardly an ambitious schedule with Utah Valley State, Clarion and Cal State-Fullerton on their plate. We're guessing those three teams combined will send two or three guys to the NCAA's. No offense, but was this a tune up or a chance for younger guys to get some mat time?
Coming up
All five Big 12 teams will be competing in the National Duals. Oklahoma State is seeded first and wrestles Kent State; Oklahoma is third and wrestles Cornell, Iowa State is seventh and faces Northwestern, Missouri is eighth and wrestles Arizona State while Nebraska wrestles fourth-seeded Iowa.
