Cadet Freestyle Notes

By Jason Bryant & Pat Tocci

Session II
Simaz, Bancroft re-wrestle
The second session of Cadet Freestyle got underway with George Bancroft of Florida, the Greco runner-up, re-wrestling a match with Michigan's Cam Simaz. According to official Ken Berger, an exposure wasn't scored in the first bout at the end of the first period because the clock had apparently expired. After a Florida protest, it was ruled that there was time on the clock when the exposure occurred and the match would have to be re-wrestled in accordance with the rules. Simaz won the first bout 8-6 in overtime.
Brancroft prevailed in the rematch 9-1.
"They ruled that it was a misapplication of the rule and we couldn't re-appeal," said Michigan coach Mike Young. "We didn't find out until we got back over here."
"We'd gone out and ate, thinking we were done with the guy and wouldn't wrestle for another two hours."

Missouri's Nay gets a scare and a loss
Early in the second period of his match against Wisconsin's Cade Sarbacker, Cadet Greco champion Shane Nay trailed 6-0 and was in the bottom position, but once Nay got back to his feet, a takedown and gut wrench re-energized him and he scored 15 straight points for a 15-6 victory in round three.
Update: Blair Academy, N.J., rising sophomore Mario Mason beat Nay 7-6 in round five.

Dak exacts some revenge
Dak Adamson of New Mexico was able to exact some revenge against DaVaughan Perkins of Nebraska with a 16-6 tech fall in the third round. Perkins had defeated Admanson in the finals of the Greco-Roman competition 6-2.

Grajales hangs onto survive
Greco-Roman Champion Eric Grajales of Florida stayed alive in his pool for another round as he won a razor thin 13-12 match over Paul Montoya of Colorado.

Double title opportunities dwindling
Another Greco champ went down on the opening day of Cadet Freestyle. Massachusetts' Sean Bilodeau notched a 12-2 technical fall over Minnesota's Greco-Roman champion Jacob Deitchler.

More Greco finalists struggling in freestyle
Cadet Greco runner-up Vince Ramos of Illinois was eliminated from competition in round four after Hunter Meys pinned Ramos at :56. Ramos did win two bouts after his opening round loss to Ohio's Eric Cubberly. ... 152-pound Greco runner-up Chris Hacker of Oklahoma was beaten by Iowa's Robert Kellogg in the fourth round 11-8 in overtime. ...

Rebertus, Civan building momentum
Maryland 152-pounder Luke Rebertus was sluggish in his first two rounds on Wednesday, but later found his groove with a technical fall and a pin. Rebertus beat New York's Bryan Bourne 6-3 in the opening round, then slipped by Minnesota's Luke Munkelwitz 6-5 before dominating Oklahoma's Derrick Thompson (10-0) and Pennsylvania's Karl DeCiantis (fall 3:58). Rebertus is hoping Maryland's rubber chicken is tossed his way later in the event. ... Eren Civan, the Greco-Roman champion at 145 pounds could be holding the chicken again. Civan is 4-0 through four rounds with four technical falls and no points given up.

Texas' Ashmore, Delaware's Meade on fire
Bishop Lynch's Luke Ashmore is rolling through the competition in the A Pool at 140 pounds. Ashmore hasn't given up a point through four rounds. ... InterMat's soon-to-be #1 ranked rising sophomore Alex Meade of Cesar Rodney, Del., has been equally impressive, teching his first four opponents with a combined score of 42-0. What might be even scarier for the competitors at 130 pounds is that Meade is a first-year cadet.
Meade stepped to the raised mat to take on North Carolina's Colton Palmer. Palmer went 61-0 on his way to the 4A state title at Riverside High School. The result was similar, a 10-0 victory for Meade, so the count is now 52-0.
Update: Ashmore improved to

Tough draw, Part II
Michigan's Marcell Dubose, the Greco runner-up at 189 pounds probably didn't like the vertical pairing he saw in his pool at 189 pounds. Sitting just above Dubose on the draw was Missouri's Deron Winn, the Greco OW who beat Dubose 14-3 in final a few days ago. Below Dubose was Ohio's Brian Roddy, who finished fifth in the Greco tournament. Roddy beat Dubose 17-9 in the opening round before falling to Winn at 1:29 in the first period.

Going for the fall
Michigan's Collin Marcicki is making an early case for the Most Falls Award. The Lapeer West standout is 5-0 with five falls already in the A Pool at 119 pounds. What's even more astounding is that Marcicki might have had the least amount of actual mat time for wrestlers still unbeaten. Marcicki has been quickly finishing opponents with times of 49 seconds, 16 seconds, 27 seconds, 24 seconds, and 38 seconds. The only round in which Marcicki didn't have a fall was in round six -- but that was because he had a bye. Five falls -- total mat time: 154 seconds or 2:34.

Session I
Tough draw
If it wasn't tough enough for Virginia freshman Schuyler Brown to be one of the few female wrestlers in the Cadet Greco & Freestyle tournaments, but her first-round draw was Cadet Greco runner-up Tyler Clark of Illinois. Clark pinned Brown, a multiple-time USGWA All-American at 1:02.

Deep weight
While the Cadet freestyle tournament usually brings a large turn-out, two weights have gone three pages deep on the vertical pairing sheets. The tournament's largest weight is 125 with 107 entries, while 119 has an even 100. No backets in the Cadet Greco reached the century mark. Expect several weights to be over 100 entries in the Junior Freestyle.

Greco finalist falls early in freestyle
Oklahoma's Richard Lopez isn't benefitting from an easy draw, nor is he benefitting from the use of the legs. Iowa's Dylan Wrage cradled up Lopez in bout 406 at 171 pounds on the raised mat and earned the fall in the second period. ... Utah Greco All-American Jaes Jones fell in the first round 6-4 to Washington's Jake Horn at 105... Greco champ Nikko Triggas pinned his first-round opponent, Alex Holloway of Georgia at 1:26 at 112 pounds. ... Blair Academy is used to having their superstar Adam Frey represent Pennsylvania, but Frey isn't the only Keystoner at Blair. 112-pounder Robert Brackup is representing Pennsylvania. He fell in his first round match to a familiar New Jersey grappler, Dan White of the Peddie School.

Missing in action
It's been quite a long time since Tori May has missed a Junior National Championship. Her mother, Lori, is announcer Sandy Stevens' assisitant and has worked the tournament for as long as anyone can remember. Tori, a rising junior at Oklahoma State, tried to make the trip up and still might try to make an apperance from Stillwater, but acquiring transportation has been an issue. "This will be the first tournament she's missed since she was two," Lori said.
Tori has been an All-American escort, a runner, an announcer's assistant and pretty much everything during her tenure in Fargo.

Perrelli tops Adamson
The brutal nature of wrestling both the Greco & Freestyle tournaments showed through immediately, as New Jersey's Frank Perrelli knocked off New Mexico's Riley Adamson 5-4 at 105 pounds in the B Pool in the second round. Adamson was third in the Greco-Roman tournament.

Greco champ falls
Iowa's Andrew Long dropped a 9-7 deision to Alex Kostenborder of Oregon in the first-round at 84 pounds. Long won the Greco tournament with a fall in the finals over Minnesota's Wade Adams. Kostenborder took fourth in the Greco tournament.

... and so does another...
Florida's Eric Grajales was pinned in his first round match against Ohio's Ben Sergent at the 2:28 mark at 98 pounds.

... thank you sir, may I have another
Vince Ramos of Illinois was knocked off in the first round at 140 pounds by Ohio's Eric Cubberly 7-2. Ramos was the fourth finalist from Greco-Roman to get beat in the opening session of the Cadet Freestyle Nationals.
