Cadet Freestyle Notes

By Jason Bryant & Pat Tocci

Line falls in overtime
Greco-Roman champion Torrey Line of Minnesota dropped a 5-4 overtime match to unbeaten Kirk Smith of Idaho at 160 pounds. It was Smith's closest match since a 5-2 win over Chris Perry of Oklahoma. Perry is the brother of University of Iowa wrestler Mark Perry, who wrestled at New Jersey's Blair Academy but is originally from Oklahoma. Smith is the only unbeaten left in the pool as Alaska's Ed Buffington, Line and Pennsylvania's Dan Mahoney of Pennsylvania have one loss.

Illinois' Ward solid through six rounds
Jerome Ward of Illinois gave up his first points of the tournament in a fifth-round win over California's Nathan Timmerman. Until Ward's 14-9 win over Timmerman, Ward had racked up four straight technical falls. Indiana's Luke Watkins is also unbeaten in the pool, as is Oregon's Troy Kessell. Kessell and Watkins wrestle in round six.
Update: Ward won his sixth round match 13-3 over Washington's Benji Martin. He'll face Watkins in round seven. Watkins fell to Kessell 7-2 in round six.

Winn still dominant
Missouri's Deron Winn could be looking to capture his second Outstanding Wrestler Award of the tournament. The 189-pound Greco-Roman champion has four tech falls and one fall through five rounds in the B Pool at 189.

Rebertus will make FS final
After falling short in Greco-Roman, Maryland wrestlers have the rubber chicken ready for Friday's Cadet Freestyle finals at 160 pounds. Luke Rebertus, who wrestles as a prep at Delaware's Caravel Academy, is unbeaten and is one of four wrestlers left in the B Pool. Rebertus has victories over Minesota's Luke Munkelwitz and Washington's Clete Hanson, both of whom have made the round-robin. Those previous victories lift Rebertus into the championship bout.

Missouri's Nay falls
Another Missouri Greco champion didn't fare as well, as Shane Nay fell 7-6 in overtime to Pennsylvania's Quentin Wright in the seventh round. Wright is still unbeaten going into his match with New Jersey's Mario Mason, also unbeaten in the A Pool at 135. Nay lost to Mason by an identical 7-6 score in round five, but Nay is still assured of an All-American placement, since there are four wrestlers left in the pool after Nay was dealt his second loss.

More Missouri
Aaron Senzee remains unbeaten in the A Pool at 125 pounds after his seventh-round 9-3 victory over California's Bud Gibson. Ohio's Danny Gonsor is unbeaten and will face Senzee in round eight. There are over 100 wrestlers in the 125 pound weight class.
in the B Pool, two unbeatens will take to the mat in round eight. Pennsylvania's Michael Robinson and yes, another Missouri wrestler, Craig Wilson are both unbeaten. Also alive in the B Pool is unbeaten Corey Jantzen of New York.
Update (6:54 p.m.): Gonsor beat Senzee 3-2 in the seventh round, that leaves Senzee with a ninth-round match with New Jersey's Kellen Russell. Dak Adamson of New Mexico is hanging tough with one loss, a 7-6 loss to Russell in the fifth round, and will face Gonsor next. Gibson beat Robinson 3-1 in overtime, his second straight 3-1 OT win.

Don't forget the little guys
Alex Kostenborder of Oregon and Richy Reinoehl of Pennsylvania are the only undefeated wrestlers left at 84 pounds. The weight, with 19 entries, is typically the tournament's smallest, is down to its last four wrestlers in the B Pool, but placement has yet to be decided. Reinoehl wrestles New Jersey's Tony Buxton in round five. Buxton, as you might have guessed, is the son of Blair Academy coach Jeff Buxton.
Update 8:20 p.m.: Long makes the final out of the A Pool with more points than Alex Kostenborder of Oregon. Kostenborder had a fourth round bye and thus, no opportunity to score points. Long scored four, four point (classification) victories, while Kostenborder had two and lost his last match to Max Nowry of Illinois. Long will face Reinoehl, who won Pool B.

Taking a tumble
Bout 2002 on the raised mat gave everyone a scare as the match between Washington's Brian Owen and Dylan Dabolt of New York went from the clinch to flying off center mat. The pair's momentum drove them, still in the clinch, off the mat where Iowa photographer Wyatt Schultz and Univeristy of Missouri 174-pounder Ben Askren caught them. As far as the scoring was concerned, Owen scored three on the throw and won the match 6-0.

Parkersburg's young gun
Rising sophomore Andy Thomas is the lone unbeaten in the B Pool at 171 pounds. Thomas went 40-7 as a freshman on the way to a 3A West Virginia state title for the Big Red. He must beat Michigan's Tyler Dickenson to make Friday's final, but Dickenson and Oklahoma's Chris McNeil both have losses. McNeil lost to Thomas 4-2 in round five.

St. Edward has a heavy
Rising junior Ben Kuhar of St. Edward, Ohio, is diligently rolling along at 275 pounds. One of the nation's top heavyweights regardless of class, hasn't allowed a point in his first five matches going into a sixth round bout with Greco-Roman runner-up Zack Rey of New Jersey. Illinois' Pete Kowalczuk has a loss, but is still in the hunt for a finals berth because his first round loss to Ohio's John Hiles was wiped from the slate. Hiles was eliminated after the third round. In the B Pool, another Ohio heavyweight is wrestling well, Cameron Wade, a state champion from St. Peter Chanel. He's unbeaten, too.
Update 8:23 p.m.: Rey beat Kuhar 5-4, but Rey will have to beat Myles Caragein, the Greco champ, in the round robin and hope for a good point output, but he has a bye and that will ultimately hurt him if the round-robin bouts are split.

Bruce is the man
Returning Cadet All-American D.J. Bruce of Illinios is 5-0 with five technical falls. Total score: 54-2. In the B Pool, Oregon's Greco champ Tyrell Fortune is also undefeated after five rounds and must beat Michigan's Dan Craig, also unbeaten, to make the final.
Update: Bruce knocked off Greco runner-up Dom Bradley of Missouri 8-6 at 189. Bruce led 5-3 before Bradley lateral dropped Bruce on the edge for three points. Bruce tied the match with a takedown with 26 seconds to go before getting the winning points on a high gut-wrench with 18 seconds to go.

Cox still in the running for a double title
Wyoming's Tyler Cox will have to get past unbeaten B.J. Futrell at 91 pounds to reach the finals at 91 in the A Pool. Cox had an opening round 14-12 win over California's Steven Salinas, but since, has three techincal falls going into his match with Futrell. Futrell has been solid, but needed overtime to beat Minnesota's David Thorn in the fourth round. In the B Pool, Mark Rappo of Pennsylvania and David Taylor of Ohio are unbeaten and will meet in the All-American round to determine a finalist. Taylor still has to wrestle California's David Klingsheim in the round-robin.
Update: Futrell beat Cox 11-6 in round six.

Apparently it wasn't a fluke
Ben Sergent made the media's collective heads turn on Wednesday with his first round pin over Cadet Greco champion Eric Grajales of Florida. Well, Sergent's still hanging around at 98 pounds in the B Pool, unbeaten going inot his seventh round match with Kansas' Nathan Furches, the Greco runner-up. Sergent beat Pennsylvania's Shane Leister 2-1 in overtime in the fifth round for his closest match of the tournament. The A Pool is still open, as Connecticut's Anthony Valles is unbeaten with all techs or falls and Missouri's Bradley Wisdom is a respectable 6-0.

Another finals berth claimed
Iowa's Nate Moore will compete in Friday's Cadet finals at 112 pounds. Moore beat both Bobby Wunnicke of Wisconsin and Brian Owen in Washington during the course of the earlier rounds. In the B Pool, it's a Western affair with Colorado's Tyler Graff and California's Nikko Triggas battling in the round-robin to determine who faces Moore.

Ashmore amazing
Texas' Luke Ashmore clinched a berth in Friday's finals, going 7-0 through eight rounds. His final 11-0 victory over Alec Ortiz in round six was the tie-breaker in the round-robin, as Ashmore wins Pool A at 140.
