Cadet Freestyle Notes

By Jason Bryant & Pat Tocci

Getting heavy right off the bat
Delaware's Alex Meade knocked off Minnesota's Travis Rutt in Friday's first match of the day -- and it was on the raised mat. Meade jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a gut-wrench, but Rutt tied the match after the break with a takedown and one-point hand-to-hand exposure. Meade countered two Rutt double-leg attempts to come out with two one-point takedowns to win the bout and move on at 130 pounds.
Update: Meade wins the Pool B title with a win over Iowa's Marshall Koethe. Meade won 7-1 and will face Massachusetts' Sean Bilodeau in the final.

Kirk Smith rolls
A Pacific Northwest matchup went all Idaho's way again on the raised mat, with Kirk Smith knocking off Alaska's Ed Buffington at 160 pounds.

Nuts about Clark
Illinois' Tyler Clark earned a trip to the Cadet Freestyle finals after a 3-0 win over Robert Ward of Pennsylvania. A first-period takedown gave him the lead at the break and a snap and spin put him up 2-0 early in the second. With 20 seconds to go, Clark secured the third point with a front headlock and go-behind.

Washington's Owen battling
Despite a loss to finalist Nate Moore of Iowa, Washington's Brian Owen won his opening round-robin bout over Wisconsin's Bobby Wunnicke 9-4. Owen got up 9-1 before Wunnicke closed the gap with a three-point double-leg. The loss will put Wunnicke wrestling for fifth place. Owen will will wrestle for third coming out of the A Pool at 112.

Colorado's Graff dominates
Tyler Graff of Colorado left little doubt about his ability with a dominating 10-0 first period tech fall over California's Nikko Triggas. Graff put Triggas in danger twice with powerful half-nelsons to end the match at 1:49 of the first period. Graff wins Pool A at 112 and will face Moore in the final.

Chamberlin into the finals at 119
Utah's Josh Chamblerin scored big points early en route to a 10-2 victory over New York's Dan Mandara at 119. Chamberlin wins the A Pool with the win and previous victory over New Jersey's Ryan Wilson.

Bay State Titan
Massachusetts' Sean Bilodeau used a trapped-arm gutwrench to pile up points quickly on Alabama's Chase Cuthbertson. Bilodeau makes the final with a 10-0 tech fall at 1:05. Cuthbertson will wrestle for third coming out of the A Pool at 130 pounds.

This kid is tough
Texas' Johnny Keopp jumped out to a 7-1 lead over Pennsylvania's Zach Kemmerer, but Kemmerer closed the gap in the second period with a three-point throw on the edge that seemed to stun Keopp. After a brief injury timeout, action resumed Kemmerer couldn't turn Keopp and they went back to standing. Kemmerer forced the action and scored a takedown at :05, but couldn't turn Keopp in the final seconds and Keopp reaches the finals out of the B Pool at 135 pounds.

Be the chicken, feel the chicken
Maryland's Eren Civan will have another chance to hold the gold medal and the rubber chicken in his hands after a 3-0 win over Missouri's Brent Hayes at 145 pounds. Civan got up 1-0 on a go-behind in the early moments of the match. Haynes held strong on the bottom in the first period, being down twice but not giving up any points. In the second, Haynes forced a passivity and put Civan in trouble, nearly turning him with a trapped-arm gut. As time wound down, neither wrestler scored the necessary three points and they went to the clinch. Haynes was warned and then hit for a caution and two -- it was confirmed but the official didn't see the confirmation as soon as Civan was tossed to his back. The referees conferred and since the caution was confirmed before the throw, Civan won 3-0.

Wright man for the job
Michigan's Pat Wright reached the finals at 152 pounds with a victory over Illinois' Eric Pretto. Wright jumped to a 3-0 lead after the first period and cruised into the finals, winning the B Pool at 152.

And it's going to be Kuhar
Up 6-3, Ohio's Ben Kuhar locked up Greco champion Myles Caragein of Pennsylvania and tossed him to his back for a second period fall. Despite a loss in the pool rounds, Kuhar will win Pool A at heavyweight.
