Going off without a hitch
Saturday’s Cadet Greco-Roman National Championships got underway promptly at the 11 a.m. CDT start time with 867 wrestlers representing 44 states. … There are two girls competing in the tournament at the Cadet level, Virginia’s Schuyler Brown and Kristi Pearse of Maine. Brown is wrestling at 105, while Pearse is at 112.
Brown dropped her first match 4-0 to Georgia’s Doug Sullivan, while Pearse lost to one of the tournament’s most imposing names – Thrasher Porter of Florida – by fall at 1:29.
Champions set to defend titles
There were no first-session surprises for the four returning Cadet National Champions. Florida’s Eric Grajales moves up to 98 pounds from his title last year at 84 pounds, Washington’s Brian Owen moves up to 112 from 98.
Maryland’s Luke Rebertus returns from a knee-injury that kept him out of action most of last season and is wrestling at 160 pounds. Missouri’s Deron Winn moves up to 189 from 171 pounds.
In the Cadet Greco portion of the event, there are 45 returning All-Americans -- that's a 35 percent return on medalists from last year's event.
A big weight
While Greco numbers are typically lower than freestyle, the 125 pound bracket in Cadet Greco is the largest weight class, with 83 entries. Highlighting the A Pool is Alaska's Hollan Gravely, and Nebraska's DeVaughan Perkins. Gravely had two technical falls, while Perkins got off to a slow start in a 4-0 victory over Missouri's K.C. Pescaglia, but rolled in his next match. In the B Pool, California's Bud Gibson rolled to a pair of techincal fall victories, while other standouts in the pool so far are Ohio's Aaron Sulzer and New Mexico's Dak Adamson. Georgia's Albert Kendall is off to a strong start, with a pair of quick falls.
