Cadet Greco Notes

Just Winn baby
InterMat's top-ranked 189 pounder, Missouri's Deron Winn (right) , has lived up to that hype so far in the Cadet Greco tournament. Winn hasn't allowed a single point to be scored on him in the event and has dispatched with his toughest foes with relative ease. A first-round bout on Saturday against Pat Daddino of New York might have made a few fans say "Hey, good match here," but Winn has just torn through everyone, including his 11-0 romp over Ohio's Brian Roddy on Monday morning. Winn's total body count so far: 5-0 record, 53 points scored, 0 points allowed.

Washington's Owen goes down
Returning Cadet Greco champion Brian Owen of Washington won't have a chance to defend his title in 2005 as Utah's Bo Beckman scored a dominating victory over Owen in an early Monday match. Beckman led 2-0 at the break and with time winding down in the second period, Beckman tossed Owen to his back with a tight headlock and secured the fall at 3:23 in round eight. Beckman will take on Nikko Triggas of California in the final at 112 pounds.

A split for the Adamsons in Monday's early round
New Mexico's Adamson family has long been familiar with national wrestling success -- from the lowest age-group levels and now on the Cadet level. In Monday's early session, Riley and Dak Adamson both were in competition and while Riley fell to a tough Tyler Clark of Illinois, Dak put on a clinic, putting the finishing touch (fall) on California's Derek Ellis. At 105, Clark got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period and extended it to 4-0 after a trapped-arm gutwrench. With time winding down, Adamson was successful with an arm throw, scoring three points, but it was as time expired. Clark won the bout 4-3. At 125, Dak Adamson jumped to a 4-0 lead on Ellis before body locking him, throwing him for five points and then getting the fall.

More New Mexico success
Rio Rancho's Max Ortega also found himself still in contention, rallying to beat Malachi Root of Wisconsin. Ortega doesn't have much of a chance to make the final after a technical fall loss to California's Nikko Triggas, but he still will give New Mexico its third Cadet Greco All-American.
