Fargo, N.D. – Some fans in the Fargodome were shocked to see their names, others figured as much. After two sessions of Cadet Greco-Roman, the four returning champions weren’t invincible, but three of the four went unscathed.
Maryland’s Luke Rebertus was the only returning champion to get hit with a loss, a 5-1 overtime loss to California’s Tito Pica in the fifth round.
Prior to Pica’s victory, Rebertus had to rally from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Montana’s Cory Shilanek 6-5.
Pica’s unbeaten in the B Pool at 160. Clarence Neeley of Missouri is the only other unbeaten in the pool. In the A Pool, Kirk Smith of Idaho is unbeaten as is Minnesota’s Torrey Line. With many wrestlers with one loss still in the picture, pool advancement might have to be decided in the late rounds.
At 98 pounds, Florida’s Eric Grajales has two technical falls and two falls, while at 112, Washington’s Brian Owen has only given up a single point in four victories. His lone non-technical fall win was a 5-1 decision over New York’s Dylan Dabolt.
At 189 pounds, Deron Winn of Missouri has simply dominated the field, not giving up a single point and cruising to a 4-0 record before his fifth round bye.
Brian Roddy of Ohio is the only other unbeaten wrestler in the pool, while Michigan’s Marcell Dubose and Ohio’s Daniel Canfield are unbeaten in the A Pool. Minnesota’s Patrick Mahan is also unbeaten and hasn’t given up a point, but all his victories have been within four points.
171 pounds is already down to the round-robin in the A Pool with Chris McNeil of Oklahoma, Shane Nolan of Pennsylvania and Andrew Buck of Washington. New York’s Nathan Schniedel is the first wrestler to guarantee himself a spot on the podium, finishing fourth in the pool. On the other side, Pennsylvania’s Zachary Benzio, Texas’ Robert Prigmore and Ryan Smith of California are unbeaten.
