Session IV
Kyler starts session off with a fall
Matt Kyler of Pennsylvania gave up the first two points of his match with Matt McNaughton of Illinois but that lead did last long. Kyler scored the next six points and then pinned McNaugton in 1:10. Also, at 112 former champion Patrick Feeley of Rhode Island stayed alive with an 11-0 tech fall over previously unbeaten Billy Chamberlain of Pennsylvania.
Ashmore techs Peterkin
Using a strong combination of powerful doubles and tight guts from top, Ben Ashmore of Texas rolled up a 12-2 tech fall in the first period over Rollie Peterkin of Massachuesetts.
Jones keeps rolling
Shawn Jones of Idaho has stayed undefeated for the week with a first period fall over Ian Moser of Delaware. Moser was up 2-1at the start of the second period before Jones countered Moser's offense and put him to his back for the fall.
Shelton eliminates Beebe
Brian Shelton of Oklahoma dealt Conor Beebe his second straight loss with an 8-5 decision in round seven. Shelton is unbeaten in the A Pool at 125 pounds.
Another tech for Frishkorn
Virginia's Jordan Frishkorn started slow, but earned his sixth straight technical fall in an 11-0 win over Oklahoma's Jamal Parks in round seven.
Moyer beats Sulzer in OT
Missouri's Derek Moyer led Ohio's Keith Sulzer 2-0 heading into overtime. From the clinch, Moyer bailed out and gave up a point and Sulzer appeared to get an exposure late in the match. The ref scored one, the judge scored three, but the mat chairman confirmed one, tying the bout at two. Moyer, headed to Lindenwood in the fall, won on criteria to stay alive.
Humphrey tops Grajales
Indiana's Reece Humphrey, the Junior Greco champ, scored three points and another point for holding Grajales in danger before adding a late takedown to win the match 5-0.
Big results coming one after another
In a span of three minutes on mats 1, 15 and 16, some of the nation's top wrestlers were set up and knocked down. Joey Slaton of Iowa dominated Alaska's Eli Hutchison at 130, while Joe Cornejo of Kansas scored a fall over Jason Welch of California. Almost immediately afterwards, one mat away, Matt Dragon of Pennsylvania scored a tech fall over Indiana's Wesley English 12-0. Tucked away from the spotlight of center mat, Lance Palmer of Ohio scored a three-point throw in the last 20 seconds to rally to beat Iowa's Daniel LeClere 8-6. ... Travis Hammons of Illinois beat Kansas' Neil Erisman 3-2 on a caution late in the match.
Kerr tops Benefiel
Two of the top underclassman met up at 160 with Jake Kerr of Iowa winning in overtime 7-5 over Mike Benenfiel of Illinois. Kerry had a two point exposure on a Benefiel shot.
Ohio's Erwin out
The Pacific Northwest wasn't kind to Ohio's David Erwin. The Penn State signee was beaten by Idaho's Clayton Foster 10-8 before getting pinned by Washington's Brent Chriswell.
Grajales knocks off Bailey
Florida's Cesar Grajales, looking for redemption after a loss in the Greco finals, beat Missouri's returning national champion Zack Bailey 7-6.
Gittomer beats Pataky
Ross Gittomer of New Jersey moved a step closer to winning his pool with an 8-7 win over Brad Pataky of Pennsylvania.
Bouts of interest
Top bouts are coming in on a rapid pace on 12 mats so it is hard to keep pace but here is a recap of a few top matches....Donnie Altman of Kansas was trailing 10-4 when he pinned Billy Chamberlain of Pennsylvania...Adam Frey of Pennsylvania built an 8-0 lead before defeating Jayson Ness of Minnesota 11-5...Franklin Gomez of Puerto Rico had 8-0 lead and had to survive being thrown to his back and nearly pinned by Rollie Peterkin of Massachuesetts before regrouping to win 11-4...Mike Grey got back on track with an 11-0 first period tech fall over previously unbeaten Steve Mytch of Pennsylvania...Brad Pataky had a first period pin over unbeaten Mike Thorn of Minnesota..Matt Vacanti of Nebraska tech falled Kellon Balum of Pennsylvania after capturing Ballum in a front headlock roll to win 13-2....
Overtime fun
Aaron Hart of Ohio led 2-0 heading into overtime with Pennsylvania's Matt Kyler at 112 before Kyler tied the bout with a broken clinch point and a takedown. Kyler nearly got the winning exposure, but Hart countered and scored the takedown for the 3-2 win. ... Travis Hammons of Illios won a thrilling 3-2 overtime bout over Alex Caruso of New Jersey. Caruso led 2-0 after two period which sent the match to the clinch. Caruso had to lock first and Hammons scored a one point takedown countering a Caruso throw attempt. Trailing 2-1, Hammons scored off a crotch-lift for two to win 3-2. ...
Sanderson survives
Utah's Cyler Sanderson survived a scare from Alaska's Kaylen Baxter at 140. With Sanderson leading 3-0 in the second period, Baxter whipped Sanderson to his back from his knees to get two points, but before a count was issued, it was stopped and ruled potentially dangerous. Baxter tied the match with 20 seconds to go with a throwby, but in overtime Sanderson finished on a deep double-leg and titled as Baxter was trying to fend off the point.
Late bouts at 160
After a scoreless first period, Florida's Rocky Cozart scored a three-point throw from the clinch to go up 3-0 on Ohio's Dave Rella and eventually went on to win 5-1. ... Ben Fiacco of Georgia used a three-point double-leg exposure with five seconds to go to beat Pennsylvania's Landis Wright 10-9.
Session III
Mitcheff beats Grey
Daniel Mitcheff of Ohio had a good start to day II of the Junior Freestyle Championships scoring a 5-2 win over Mike Grey of New Jersey. Grey is ranked as the third best recruit in the nation for 2006 by Intermat.
Ness upends Shinn
Jayson Ness of Minnesota had a key win on trying to return to the finals defeating Tyler Shinn of Oklahoma 3-1. Shinn was holding a 1-0 lead when a scramble resulted in a two point exposure for Ness. The mat chairman had ruled the scramble as two and two. After a conference of the officials, the call was two only for Ness. Ness scored his third point on a double when he forced Shinn out of bounds. The Oklahoma coaches were upset with the call but it looked to be the correct call.
Bailey survives
Zach Bailey of Missouri trailed 5-2 at the break with Kellon Ballum of Pennsylvania before rallying in the second period to win 9-5. Bailey was trailing 5-4 with under a minute to go when he got into a scramble situation with Ballum and Ballum attempted a granby roll to get out of the position. While this technique would work well in scholastic it resulted in a two point exposure for Bailey. Ballum at this point was visibily tired and Bailey took advantage by adding a tilt from top and another takedown for the win.
Boris wins a tight one
Greco-Roman Champion, Boris Novachkov of California won a tight 3-1 win over Pennsylvania talented Nico Cortese at 98lbs.
Ashmore and Peterkin score comebacks to win
Ben Ashmore of Texas trailed 6-2 to Bryan Lashomb of Virginia before rallying to lead 7-6 then scoring a fall at 3:42. Rollie Peterkin of Massachuessetts trailed Galloway Longenecker of Pennsylvania 9-7 in the wanning seconds when he scored a one point takedown and then a high gut to eeke out a 10-9 win and stay undefeated at 119.
English loses while Cornejo pins Stitch at 145
Jason Welch of California scored a 9-4 upset over Wesley English of Indiana in round 5. Joseph Cornejo scored a fall in 4:35 over Brandon Stitch of Washington.
Palmer and Mangini take center mat
Ohio's Lance Palmer jumped out to a 4-0 lead on New Jersey's John Mangini and Palmer worked hard for another point from the top position on a hand-to-hand gut. The St. Edward standout opened up in the second period, geting two and an exposure for an 11-0 tech fall at the 5:48 mark.
Sanderson big second period to defeat Leclere
Cyler Sanderson of Utah broke open a 3-3 tie with Daniel Leclere of Iowa to win 8-3 in a feature match at 140. Sanderson struck first with a double for a one point takedown. Leclere then took a 3-1 lead scoring a takedown off a front headlock and then scoring on a trap arm gut. Sanderson reversed Leclere then scored on a hand to hand gut to tie the match at the break. In the key moment of the match, Leclere was in on a deep double looking to score when Sanderson was able to step over and expose Leclere for two and then added a two point gut for a 7-3 lead. Sanderson added a late takedown to close out the scoring. Sanderson was wearing a knee brace after suffering a knee injury in the Greco competition.
Virginia strong at 215
Junior Greco runner-up Brent Jones is rolling along, unbeaten in the A Pool at 215 pounds. Jones, bound for the University of Virginia, is 6-0 with all victories coming via tech fall or pin, including a fall over Ohio's Ryan Nacthrab. Cody Gardner is 5-0 and beat Wisconsin's Trevor Branvold in round six 9-4.
Blasco hits wall, but hangs on
New Jersey's Travis Blasco is unbeaten and built a 9-0 lead over Greco champion T.J. Moen of Iowa, but hung on for a 12-10 victory.
Dragon rolls at 145
152-pound Greco runner-up Matt Dragon of Pennsylvania continued on in the A Pool, eliminating Washington's Brandon Sitch with a 10-0 tech fall.
Update: Dragon and Joseph Cornejo of Kansas remain undefeated and will meet to see who goes to the finals. English finishes fourth in the pool and Jason Welch of California finished third in the pool.
