Sanderson withdraws from Greco
Returning Junior Greco runner-up Cyler Sanderson of Utah withdrew from competition after suffering a knee injury in his Sunday evening win over Vince Salminen of Montana. Sanderson had to comeback from an 8-0 defecit to win the match 11-9 in the waning seconds. After having his knee examined by medical staff, Sanderson withdrew. He is expected to compete in freestyle which starts on Thursday.
Cozart defeats Bounds in Round 5
Rocky Cozart of Florida and Kyle Bounds of Washington, two of the nation's premier Greco wrestlers met up in the fifth round at 160. Cozart defeated the 2004 Junior Greco national champion 7-4.
Bounds got on the board first with a two-point gut wrench after Cozart was put down for being passive. Trailing 2-0 after the break, Cozart took the lead by scoring one point off a slide by and then hitting a gut to lead 3-2. Cozart added another point when Bounds was hit with technical violation for head butting Cozart. Bounds tied the match up at 4-4 in a wild scramble when he countered a Cozart throw for two but Cozart was able to scrambe out and hit Bounds for a three point throw which was the difference in the match.
Flooden having a strong tournament at 119
In a deep A Pool Seth Flooden of Minnesota is having a strong tournament through round six. Flooden has five falls or tech falls and also a 4-3 win over Missouri's Scott O'Donnell. Flooden had a :27 fall over previously unbeaten Preston Gentry of Idaho in round six. Flooden was defeated in round seven with a 5-4 loss to Franklin Gomez of Puerto Rico.
Martin close to being Conneticut's first ever Junior Greco Finalist
Joey Martin of Conneticut will look to be the first known Junior Greco finalist for his state. Martin is undefeated in his pool which is down to the round robin after pinning previously undefeated Galloway Longenecker of Pennsylvania in the last round. Longenecker joins Martin in the round robin along with Cameron Mowery of North Carolina. Longenecker pinned Mowery in round five. Martin only needs to not get pinned in his match with Mowery and he will advance to the finals.
Craig and Burk battle at 171
David Craig of Florida needed a strong second period to defeat Duke Burk of Illinois at 171lbs. After trailing 1-0 at the break Craig broke the match up by turning Burk three times with a gut to win 7-1.
112 Pool B wild
Matthew Kyler of Pennsylvania is working his way back into the mix in the B Pool after defeating defending champion Matthew McNaughton of Illinois 6-3 in round five. McNoughton was undefeated at the time with a win over Anthony Jorge of Florida who was undefeated at the time. Jorge had a big win in round five eliminating Donnie Altman of Kansas with a fall in 1:43. In the previous round, Altman had defeated Daniel Coyne of Indiana, who had a big win over Kyler earlier in the event eliminating Coyne from the event. Staying undefeated in Pool B Ian Agguire of Texas who eliminated Jorge with an 8-6 win. He has yet to meet Kyler and McNaughton.
Mytch, Iorio and Jones all undefeated at 125
Steve Mytch of Pennsylvania remained undefeated in Pool A at 125. Mytch needed a late comback to eliminate Tristen Dehazer of Kansas 4-3 to stay undefeated. In Pool B, Shawn Jones of Idaho and Chris Iorio of New York remain undefeated. They will meet in the round robin.
Ness Eliminated and Frey Undefeated in 130 Pool A
Defending Greco Champion Jayson Ness of Minnesota was eliminated in round seven by Adam Frey of Pennsylvania who pinned Ness in :22. Ness suffered his first loss in round six to Ryan Moyer of Missouri 7-5. Frey has been on a tear with five tech falls and pins of :13 and :22 in his last two matches. ...
Austin Enoch of Oregon and Jake Mellmer of North Dakota remained unbeaten in the 130lbs pool B.
Woody eliminated at 98
In the first round on day two, the nation's top junior female at 98 met one of the nation's top males when Nicole Woody of Maryland met Boris Novachkov of California. Novachkov won the match with a 10-0 tech fall.
Humphrey tearing it up at 135
Reece Humphrey of Indiana has been a man on a mission at 135lbs. Humphrey is undefeated including tech falls over Cadet National Champion Matt Vacanti of Nebraska 16-6 and Cam Watkins of Maryland 11-0. His win over Vacanti eliminated the Cadet National Champion from the tournament. Humphrey will meet his second cadet national Champion in the next round when he meet T.J. Moen of Iowa. Moen also is undefeated in the pool.
In Pool B, Cesar Grajales of Florida and Kevin Levally of Colorado will meet in the round robin to see who the finalist will be in the pool. Joining them in the round robin with a loss is Joe Breen of Maryland.
O'Conner in finals at 140
J.P. O'Conner of New York became the first junior finalist by winning pool A at 140. O'Conner advanced on the stregnth of his round six win over Trevor Hall of Washington 7-3.
Defending champion Brent Robbins of Illinois is undefeated and one match away from advancing to the finals for a second time. Robbins needs a win over Esai Dominquez of Iowa to advance to the finals in his pool.
Metcalf cruising at 145
Defending champion of Brent Metcalf of Michigan is cruising in Pool B. Metcalf has six tech falls and an 8-1 win over Levi Price of Minnesota. He looks to be on a collision course with Cadet National Champion Brandon Stitch of Washington. Stitch is undefeated in Pool A and needs a win over Kyle DeBerry of Arizona to advance to the final.
Toledo scores big win in round 7
When you mention the big names from Florida, Marco Toledo is not one often heard. Toledo might be quickly changing all that as he is undefeated through round seven in pool A. Highligting his run is a 3-1 win over Jon Reader of Michigan. Reader had a big win of his own -- a tech fall over defending runner-up Wesley English of Indiana. English was then eliminated by Jake Kerr of Iowa. Matt Dragon of Pennsylvania is the lone undefeated wrestler in Pool B.
All Florida final at 160?
With Cozart's win over Bounds, gave him the inside track to the finals at 160lbs. He might see another Florida face in the finals as Jesse Robbins remains undefeated in Pool A. Robbins needs a win over Landis Wright of Pennsylvania to guarantee himself a spot in the finals.
Loera and Craig Undefeated at 171
David Craig of Florida stays undefeated at 171 and needs a win over Clayton Foster of Idaho to advance to the finals in Pool B. Rick Loera of Illinois is the lone undefeated wrestlers in Pool B but he has yet to face either of his round robin opponents: Kaleb Young of Minnesota and Jeff James of Oklahoma.
Caputo on track at 189
Harvard-bound Louis Caputo of Missouri is the lone undefeated wrester at 189 in Pool B. Four wrestlers are still alive all with one loss in pool B.
Jones dominating 215
Virginia's Brent Jones is still rolling, with three falls under 30 seconds and three technical falls. He's not allowed a point in six matches. There's four wrestlers left in the Poll and Jones is nearly a lock to make the final, as he's the only unbeaten in the A side. In the B Pool, Robby Smith of California is undefeated as is Daniel Erekson of Idaho.
Another Big Tex
It might be Lance Armstrong who's known world wide as "Big Tex," but Justin Wren upended Drake McCoy of Georgia 4-0 to remain unbeaten in the A Pool. Florida's Kenny Lester is unbeaten after a 7-4 victory over previously unbeaten Nathan Fernandez of Oklahoma. California's Eric Nye pinned Minnesota's Brady Wilson in round seven. Four wrestlers in the B Pool were unbeaten until the seventh round, Lester and Nye are left unbeaten.
